Seminar on Epigenomics at Osmania University
Event

A day-long national seminar on Epigenomics was organized at the Osmania University on the 1st of August by the Departments of Genetics and Biotechnology. The event saw the presence of Dr Fahim Halim Khan, who formally introduced his book The Elements of Immunology, along with representatives from Pearson Education, the global leader in educational publishing. Professor K. Janardhan Reddy, Principal, University College of Science, was the chief guest of the event. Dr Rakesh Mishra, Senior Scientist, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, released the book. Professor Mohd. Ishaq, Chairman and BOS of Genetics, Osmania University; Professor Dwarkanath K. Murthy, Head of the Department of Genetics; and Professor Padma Balaravi, Organizing Secretary, were also present.

The Elements of Immunology is designed to introduce readers to the exciting world of immunology, the people who populate it and foster a curiosity to question and know more. The book is supported by a consistent, colourful art programme. The detailed explanation of concepts and terms, and the deconstruction of complex molecular mechanisms into simple, easy-to-remember steps help students focus on the fundamentals without any distractions. Packed with extensive Web-based supplements, the book enables students to visualize concepts, thereby enriching the learning process.

This book consists of key experiments conducted over a period of time and findings of significant contributors to the area of immunology. This helps students to trace the development and progress of the subject over time. It is a significant tool that the students of immunology can use to amplify their knowledge base.

Talking about his experience in writing the book Professor Fahim Halim Khan said; “As a student, I dreamt of such a book. In my years as a teacher, I observed this need in my students as well. From experience, I learnt that a text on immunology is best utilized when accompanied by colourful artwork. This, in combination of a concise and structured style of presentation, ensures that the students are not intimidated by the details of the subject matter. Finally, a student can never learn from a text that they cannot comprehend. So when I decided to write a book on immunology, I knew what I had to do.”
